LBYH Tryout Process

The overriding objective of tryouts is to have current coaches, who are familiar with the players and competitive level, choose teams. To accomplish this, ratings are conducted in two phases.

Phase I:  Coaches Evaluation
Each coach is required to rate his current team and three others as assigned by the Tryout Coordinator.  The evaluation is a numerical rating, based on the coaches own criteria, showing which team the coach feels each rated player should be placed on for the next season. For instance, a rating of the current PW 3 team of players moving up to Bantams may look like:

Joey Smith                        3                        (player should be a Bantam 3)
Phil Jones                        2.5                      (player is in between a B2 and B3)

Phase II. Scrimmage
Prior to the tryout scrimmage, the Tryout Coordinator will consolidate all of the coaches’ ratings and assign all of the players to a line for the scrimmage. All of the coaches will have a chance to review the seedings prior to the actual tryout. During the tryout, each rater will make a final rating for each player. Immediately after the scrimmage, each coach will meet with the Tryout Coordinator to choose each team.

Raters
Teams will be chosen by the current coaches according to the following schedule.

            Level                                                Raters
            Bantam                        B1, B2, B3, PW1, PW2, PW3, PW4, PW5
            Pee Wee                     PW1, PW2, PW3, PW4, PW5, S1, S2, S3, S4
            Squirt                           S1, S2, S3, S4, M1, M2
Mite                              M1, M2 and three board chosen representatives

Each head coach is required to act as a rater. If he cannot attend, he must choose a representative (preferably an assistant coach) to be approved by the Board.

Selection Committee
Immediately following the scrimmage, each rater will meet to choose the final teams. The Tryout Coordinator will attend in order to oversee the process. The Tryout Coordinator will have final say on the number of teams; the number of players assigned to each team, and whether open spots will be assigned at different levels.  Additionally, the Tryout Coordinator will determine the procedure to break ties in voting.

Coach Selection
Once the teams are selected, the Coaching Coordinator will determine coaches for each team under the direction of the Board President.
